Tuscan Mountain Cottage

Wecome to our little mountain cottage, for hire for your Tuscan holiday. If you would like to rent it for a weekend or a week (or more!) then get in touch

It's a perfect place for getting away from it all - whilst being within very easy reach of some lovely Tuscan towns, villages and countryside.

We love the area for the walking and mountain biking as well as for the wonderful Italian food and wine and we hope you will too.

THE HOUSE

The house is part of an old stone-built farmhouse. It is set on the mountainside at an altitude of 840 meters. We look onto Monte Nero which is a national park. Walking routes ("sentieri") meander all through the valleys. The setting is wonderfully peaceful and rural but is just a five minute drive to the E45 motorway and a very short walk to the Pizzeria that's open on weekends all through the summer.

There is one sala/ lounge with a log burning stove, double door and a window onto views of the mountain, in the next room there is a lovely kitchen , it's a great size with a big table, a gas oven and an old-fashioned wood stove. The bathroom is downstairs that has a hot water tank and a shower.

Upstairs there is an extra sitting room that currently has a single sofa-bed in it. The main bedroom has a very comfortable double bed. With the peace and quiet at night, all that walking or cycling (or eating!) in the day and the bedroom shutters closed it's easy to get a great night's rest.

THE AREA

The village the house is in is a beautiful hamlet called Cerignone, just a 5 minute drive from the E45 that runs from Pergugia to Cesena. It's on the Tuscan side of the Tuscany/ Emelia Romagna border. Cerignone has a collection of houses; some permanent residents and some that are holiday homes. The house is at the top end of the village and is very peaceful with a stunning view onto Monte Nero.

There's a walking route (sentiero) signposted with by red and white waymarkers. There are beautiful walks and mountain bike rides from right outside the front door to the top of the valley of the Tiberina. The Cananeccia river that you will cross on the way up the mountain feeds the Tiber river, the source of which is here. We're also just below where the Tiberina natural park begins. The park leads up to the Gualanciole pass a favourite bridle path.

In the summer months a Pizzeria opens up at the weekends and makes lovely (and very cheap) pizzas in a real home-like setting. You'll also find a shop and bar at the foot of the mountain selling bread, cheese, ham and stock cupboard basics.

Our closest town is Pieve Santo Stefano - ten minutes drive away. Here you'll find the supermarket, fresh pasta shop and along with grocery shops, butchers and a fresh produce market every Monday..

Sansepolcro is one of the highlights for us, it's the big town in the area and has a really attractive historical centre with plenty to interest lovers of history and of food and wine and shopping. It's an important town on the Piero della Francesca trail along with the lovely hilltop town of Monterchi which has the Madonna del Parto on display.

We're also under an hour from Arezzo with its antiques market and less than two hours from Florence and Siena.

Local towns well worth a visit are Anghiari, Monterchi, La Verna, Caprese Michelangelo (guess who was born there) and the spa town of Badia Telalda.

The links on the right hand side will shortly take you to pages with more information about the local areas.

We have a pile of maps and guides to the area available for use at the house and would definitely recommend the Sansepolcro tourist office if you need more information. One of our favourite books has a number of way-marked walking and mountain biking trails (including to La Verna) some of which can be joined from the house and wind their way through the forest trails, plains and natural parks. www.valtibike.com is also useful for these.

Outdoors

You'll find that there's plenty to do outside here. The house is on a walking path and there are many beautiful walks on the surrounding hills and from the towns around and about as well as cycle tracks. The house has loads of maps for you to plan your adventures.

We have two Cannondale mountain bikes that are available for hire at £15 per week if you would like to use them.

Prices for the house for the week are:

If you'd like to look at availability for the house then have a look at our site on our holiday lettings site here.

Getting there:

We tend to fly Ryanair to Bologna Forli, Rome Ciampino, Pisa or Ancona. Any budget airline to those airports, Florence, Perugia or Rimini would be ideal.
For car hire we have found Hertz (if accessed via Ryanair) cheapest.
Recently we have tended to get the fast train from Arezzo to Rome and then drive from Arezzo to the house (c40mins). Alternatively, there are frequent pullmans (coaches) from Arezzo to Sansepolcro, which is 15 mins from house. There are also trains to Perugia from Sansepolcro itself.
