Traditionally founded in 789 by Idris I, the city of Fès quickly became an important religious and commercial center, a point of reference for the whole of North Africa. The Arab dynasties that followed (Umayyads, Almoravids, Almohads...) moved the capital to Marrakesh, but Fès reached the peak of its splendor (with 200,000 inhabitants). Fès once again became the capital of Morocco with the arrival of the Merinid Berbers in 1250.
Today, Fès is a city that lives mainly in crafts (ceramics, leather and cedar wood processing) and tourism, thanks to a very interesting historical center with splendid monuments including the Royal Palace, the Madrasa Bou Inania and the ancient Jewish quarter (Mellah).
