La Gironde is a French department established immediately after the revolution of 1789 by bringing together the medieval provinces of Guyenne and Gascony. Still at the end of the 18th century, the Gironde appeared as a marshy and shabby territory (about 65% of the surface). Only with the agricultural plan of 1857, which regulated the agricultural and pastoral use of the region, much of the marshes were reclaimed and healed.

Today the region lives thanks to the wine production in the Bordeaux area (where the wine of the same name is produced) and tourism, with notable seaside resorts concentrated in the centers of Soulac, Montalivet, Hourtin, Lacanau, Ardenos-les-Bains, Arcachon and Pyla-sur-Mer.
