Founded probably in the early Middle Ages, the town was conquered by the Arabs following the invasion of the Iberian peninsula. In 1140 the city was recaptured by the Christian king Sancho I who fortified it in order to prevent a second Arab reconquest. And here the city took its name Guarda, being a fortress against possible Muslim attacks.

The city is today a splendid medieval center with houses made of dark stone and striking elements typical of the Gothic style. Unfortunately, the city walls have not survived and have been incorporated into the houses over the centuries. Among the best monuments are the Sé Catedral de Guarda, the Torre de Menagem, and the church of São Vicente, but in the vicinity of the city it is possible to visit the Beira Interna, famous for its numerous Spanish castles.
