La Romana takes its name from an ancient weighbridge that was managed by an Italian family from Rome to evaluate the goods entering the island of Hispaniola.
To date, La Romana is one of the richest cities in the Dominican Republic, thanks in particular to the great tourist influx in the region, mainly generated by the luxury tourist village of Casa de Campo. Moreover, the city is a real crossroads between the main locations of the Dominican Republic such as Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Bàvaro and Bayahibe. The other great economic engine of La Romana is the production of sugar, started by Italian settlers at the beginning of the 19th century.
