Already known by the Greeks with the toponym Ολισσιιπο, the city was conquered by the Romans during the Punic Wars and renamed Felicitas Iulia. The modern toponym derives from the names the city assumed while it was under the dominion of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, Ulishbona, and then the Arab, al-Isbunah. Lisbona lived under the Moorish domination a period of great splendor and the Alfama neighborhood is the only one of the ancient districts of Lisbon still visible, as this is the only portion of the old city which survived the terrible earthquake of 1755. The Catholic reconquest took place in the 11th century and the Arabs have not set foot in the city since then.

The symbols of the city are the Castle of São Jorge, the Monastery of Jerónimos, the Tower of Belém and the ruins of the Convento da Ordem do Carmo (destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 and left as a reminder of the tragedy that costed the city over 50,000 dead).
