Already inhabited in the Bronze Age (1000 BC), the area of Locarno was crossed in Roman times by the Via Vigezzina that connected Oscella (today Domodossola) with Lake Maggiore. In the Middle Ages, Locarno entered the possessions (alternately) of Milan and Como. In 1516 (Peace of Fribourg) the area of Locarno passed (along with the Verbano) to the Swiss Confederation: political stability, however, came at a high price, given that the province was fundamentally outside the area of influence of the Austrian Illuminism. To make matters worse, the collapse of a tower that obstructed the road that had made Locarno's fortune also contributed. Only the construction of the railway in 1870 allowed the city to recover.

Today the district of Locarno hosts some typical, very interesting and particular countries, such as Ascona, Ronco and Sonogno.
