Lugano is the main center of Italian Switzerland and is a particularly rich city, among the first ones in Switzerland. Historically, we know that in Roman times the Via Mala passed through Lugano, a communication artery between Como and Splügen, and the city was the endline for the Via Varesina. The first written testimonies of the center appear, however, in the 8th century in a donation of King Liutprand. Like Locarno, Lugano was also affected by Italian conflicts, entering the Milanese possessions in the 14th century. In 1512 the Swiss took possession of the city, but we had to wait for 1815 with the Congress of Vienna to have a reform of the confederation leading to the birth of modern Switzerland with twenty-two cantons.

Unfortunately, the demographic and technological boom of the last fifty years has led to the destruction and/or alteration of many of the historic buildings that characterized Lugano and to date only a few buildings maintain their original characteristics unaltered. Among the monuments worth visiting are the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto, the Portici of Via Nassa and Piazza della Riforma with its colorful buildings.

The district of Lugano also hosts two important ski resorts: Bedea-Novaggio and Certara.
