Mythologically founded by Manto, as recalled by Dante ("They built their city over those dead bones, / and, after her who first the place selected, / Mantua named it, without other omen"), the city of Mantua was more realistically founded by the Umbrians and then inhabited by Etruscans and Celts. Under the Roman domination, the poet Virgil was born there. In the Middle Ages (1000) the powerful family of Canossa took power and Mantua remained in their hands until 1276 when it passed to the Bonacolsi family. Just fifty years later the Gonzaga took power by force and maintained control of the duchy until 1707 (when the land passed to the Austrians). The Gonzagas made the city a real jewel that attracted artists from all over Italy: Pisanello, Alberti, Mantegna and Giulio Romano left indelible traces of their work.

The main monuments of the city are the Cathedral of San Pietro, the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, the Temple of San Sebastiano, the Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Te (masterpiece designed by Giulio Romano) and the Castle of San Giorgio.
