The city of Parthenope was founded by the Cumans in the 8th century BC in honor of the siren Î Î±ÏÎ¸ÎµÎ½ÏŒÏ€Î·. The city then passed from hand to hand, eventually ending up in the hands of the Bourbons of Spain who ruled the city until the unification of Italy in the 19th century.
The city has an artistic and architectural heritage among the richest in Italy, with churches, palaces and squares from all historical periods.
