Piacenza was founded by the Romans (Placentia) in 218 BC as a military outpost against Hannibal and was, together with Cremona, the first colony in northern Italy. After the Punic wars, the city prospered as a commercial center along the Via Aemilia. In the Middle Ages it passed first into the hands of the Longobards and then the Franks. The position along the Via Francigena allowed the city to maintain a good standard of life and in 1126 Piacenza declared itself a free municipality and sided alongside the Lega Lombarda against Barbarossa. In the following centuries the city passed into the hands of the Visconti (1336-1447), the French and even the Papal States. In 1848, under Austrian domination, the city requested the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, earning the name of the città primogenita d'Italia. Nowadays, Piacenza has a strong tourist vocation.

Over the centuries the city has been literally filled with monuments, among which stand out the Antiquarium of Santa Margherita, the Church of Sant'Antonino, the Palazzo Gotico (municipal), Palazzo Farnese, the Palazzo del Governatore (the work of Lotario Tomba) and the Facsal, a beautiful tree-lined avenue built on the renaissance walls of the city.
