The county of San Diego, although inhabited since time immemorial, has very few centers dating back more than a century ago. The native population of America has left no significant traces in this sense and only very few buildings date back to the Spanish and Mexican colonial period.

The first European to reach the Bay of San Diego was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, but it was only in 1602 that Sebastián Vizcaíno gave the region its name to commemorate the day of San Diego of Alcalá in which he landed. The real center was born only in 1769 and remained a small village with only a few hundred inhabitants until 1867. The discovery of gold deposits in the mountains next to the city led to an increase in population that was however held back by the rapid depletion of the deposits and a consequent depopulation. Only in the early 20th century, with the creation of military and aviation bases, the city took off and became an important center on the West Coast. Even today, San Diego hosts regiments of the US Navy and US Army.

Today the city looks like a modern city, with skyscrapers and buildings in reinforced concrete and steel, with the exception of the original nucleus of the city that still preserves a Spanish Mediterranean style.
