Inhabited since ancient times, the Sintra region was certainly an important place for the Romans, as evidenced by some findings.

The city was fortified and expanded by the Arabs only to be then reconquered by the Christians in 1109. The municipality of Sintra was officially established in 1154 with a foral by Alfonso Henriques. The region became an important tourist destination in the early 20th century and with the proclamation of the republic in 1910 Sintra was involved in a profound process of modernization and promoted initiatives to protect the immense artistic and cultural heritage of the region. In recent years, many Portuguese architects used Sintra as a "white canvas" for their works: Raul Lino, Norte Júnior and Tertuliano de Lacerda Marques.

Among the most interesting monuments of the region we must remember the prehistoric Dolmen, the Aguas Livres aqueduct, the Quinta de Penha Verde, Queluz National Palace, the National Palace of Sintra and the Quinta da Regaleira.
