Located "where Sile and Cagnano join" (Dante Alighieri, Paradiso, IX), Treviso already existed in pre-Roman times but became a thriving commercial center only with the conquest of Cisalpine Gaul by Rome. The fall of Rome did not cause great upheaval in Treviso, which instead remained a rather flourishing center the Longobards endowed with an important mint that remained active even in the following centuries.

From 1000 the city lived a period of unparalleled development, building palaces and monuments and establishing one of the first universities (1321). From the 13th century, the municipality became a Signoria (meaning lordship) and various families led the city: Ezzellini, Collalto, da Camino and Scaligeri.

With a voluntary submission to Venice, Treviso enjoyed a period of uninterrupted peace until 1866 when the inhabitants of the city (at that point part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) voted for the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. The city was affected by bombing during the two world wars but was nevertheless a fundamental railway hub of northern Italy.

Numerous monuments dot the city, but the most important are undoubtedly the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo, the Temple of San Nicolò, Piazza dei Signori, Palazzo dei Trecento and the Loggia dei Cavalieri.
