Vibo Valentia
VIBO VALENTIA - LUXURY VILLAS AND APARTMENTS FOR SALE IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE
The origin of Vibo Valentia dates back to the Bronze Age, given the presence of a necropolis attributable to this period. From the 7th century BC the city was a Greek colony with the name of Hipponion and frequent clashes with Crotone are documented. In 379 BC the Carthaginians settled the city, repopulating its center. The city then passed again into Greek hands to finally end up into the hands of the Romans who renamed it Valentia. The city became a thriving port and was chosen as a territory for war veterans.
With the end of the Roman Empire the city was reconquered by the Byzantines, but the Arab attacks made it difficult to keep control of Valentia. The Normans conquered the city in the 11th century and from that moment on the city began to grow again, with the new name of Monteleone. The late Middle Ages and the modern age were a period of prosperity for the city, dominated first by the Angevins and then by the Aragonese.
In the 19th century, under the French domination, the city became the capital of Calabria Ultra only to then lose its relevance with the return of the Bourbons. The discontent against the Spanish rulers meant that the population welcomed the Garibaldi troops with open arms, providing materials and economic aid. In 1861 the city was officially annexed to the Kingdom of Italy and the name changed to Monteleone di Calabria. The current name, Vibo Valentia, was restored by fascism in 1928 in honor of the ancient Latin name of the city.
Among the most beautiful and fascinating monuments of the city we can mention the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Leoluca, the Chiesa del Carmine (with its peculiar oval shape), the Arco Marzano, the Castello Svevo-Normanno and the Castello di Bivona.
In this city with a thousand-year history, Romolini Immobiliare is pleased to present a selection of luxury beachfront villas, farms for sale on the sea and apartments for sale in the historic center.
