Casole d'Elsa

Nestled in the enchanting Tuscan countryside of Casole d’Elsa, about 30 kilometers west of Siena, lies a small medieval village that exudes the essence of history. Although its name hints at Etruscan origins, the earliest documented records of this village date back to 994 AD, when a local nobleman gifted the entire village to his wife as a wedding present. The village's strategic location near Siena led to its development as a fortified castle, forming part of a defensive line along the Montagnola ridge to protect the Sienese state.

The history of this remarkable place extends through the ages, reaching a poignant chapter during World War II. It was then that local farmers, displaying immense courage and compassion, sheltered a Jewish family from Nazi persecution by falsifying their documents. In 2019, these brave individuals were posthumously honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.

The expansive complex comprises fourteen buildings, including two towers, the main palace, and the church dedicated to Saint Peter with its rectory. Each structure features characteristic mixed stone masonry, reflecting the timeless craftsmanship of the region.

While some of these buildings have stood vacant for many years, others were inhabited until just a few decades ago, making the task of restoration more straightforward for some structures.
