Founded by the Romans under the name of Regium Lepidi, the city prospered under the Empire and then almost completely disappeared in the early Middle Ages. The Longobard conquest allowed Reggio nell'Emilia to rise again and the city declared itself a free municipality. The internal struggles weakened the city which fell under the Este rule and became an autonomous Duchy. The situation changed in 1796, when the Napoleonic troops entered the city. An assembly decreed the birth of the Cispadana Republic (including the territories of Bologna, Ferrara, Moderna and Reggio) and the following year the same assembly promoted the adoption of a tricolor for the Republic on the model of the French flag. The Congress of Vienna restored the Duchy, under the control of the Este and Austria, that remained alive until 1860, when Reggio voted for the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
The historic center of Reggio, of hexagonal shape, is crossed by the Via Aemilia and presents monuments from the 16th and 18th centuries: among the main buildings, we must cite the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Palazzo Ducale, the Oratorio del Cristo and Palazzo Manenti.
