HISTORY OF THE CASTLE

The castle was originally built by the Malatesta family in the late 13th century and was for a long time a strategic garrison in the Montefeltro area. Over the centuries the property was contested and later controlled by the Montefeltro family, helping to define the historical and military importance of the town. Over time, the complex underwent expansions and transformations that gradually adapted the structure to a noble residence, yet kept intact many medieval architectural elements.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING

The tower (395 m² – 4,250 ft², 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms) is split into three independent apartments plus a technical room (4 sqm – 43 sqft) with with own access from outside.

• Apartment A (186 m² – 2,001 ft²): living room, reading room, kitchen, two bedrooms with en-suite bathroom and walk-in closet. The veranda outside the living room offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills, while a staircase descends into the cellar;
• Apartment B (76 m² – 818 ft²): kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom;

The building was mainly realized with alberese stone, a calcareous rock typical of the Florentine countryside, and was built in the 13th century. Inside the tower, the restoration aimed at preserving its most characteristic features, with stone walls and doorways well visible. A new renovation carried out in 2022 included the replacement of the insulation on the terrace and a general retouching of the finishes.

The manor house dates back to the first half of the 16th century (1524 – 1543) and over the centuries, having passed through the estates of various families, it was enlarged and decorated according to the new fashions of the time. The current façade dates back to the late 18th century, although the two towers were later lowered in 1846 following an earthquake. The building was completely renovated in 2002 by the current owners.

The property consists of several buildings (over 14,000 m², mostly to be restored) scattered within an estate of 289.4 hectares: the possibilities of use are many, from simple agricultural estate with farmhouses and apartments for rent (Agriturismo), to luxury hotel with golf course.

The castle (2,700 m² – 29,052 ft²) is an imposing building of medieval original placed on the top of a hill, overlooking the entire valley. The earliest certain records of the fortress date from 962 with a deed signed by Emperor Otto II, but the castle’s present appearance is the result of two successive reconstructions and extensions dating between the 14th and 16th centuries. The castle’s military function finally ceased in the early 18th century, when the building was fully consolidated and renovated before being converted into a farm.

The building retains much of its original finish, preserved through restoration and conservation over the years. Particularly striking are the halls in the basement characterized by immense vaulted ceilings and the central courtyard, a perfect location for weddings and private events. On the upper floors the halls are those typical of aristocratic settings, with coffered ceilings and plastered walls.

In the hills between Arezzo and Anghiari, originally guarding the Valcerfone, medieval castle to be restored for sale. The original nucleus of the property, consisting of a watchtower that is still partially visible, can be dated to the 11th century (as Repetti also writes in his Dizionario geografico fisico storico della Toscana). Over the years various buildings were constructed adjacent to the tower, which ended up being incorporated into the complex visible today. Then the church with the refectory and various structures serving the village were added, which, again according to Repetti, still had 350 inhabitants in 1784.

The complex (approximately 1,400 m²) is now in a state of neglect and in need of major renovation. Over the years the buildings have been used as a “quarry” for materials, but the hamlet retains its original structure and the division of the interior rooms is clearly recognizable. Due to its historical significance, part of the complex is listed as a culturally relevant site by the Soprintendenza.

The property has some flat areas adjacent to the buildings (about 1,950 m²) that could be used for the creation of a terraced garden. On the other hand, the rest of the land is mainly covered by woods (5.1 ha with chestnut trees) and small areas now covered meadow (1.1 ha) but in the past used for grazing animals.
