Fermo ist eine mittelalterliche Stadt der Marken, die bis in die vorrömische Zeit zurückreicht. Der Name der Stadt (Firmum Picenum) scheint vom lateinischen firmus oder "treu" abzuleiten, da die Stadt sowohl im punischen Krieg gegen Karthago eine unerschütterliche Loyalität gegenüber Rom zeigte. Nach dem Untergang des Römischen Reiches ging die Stadt zunächst an die Langobarden und dann an die Franken über, die sie zum Bezugspunkt für die sogenannte Marca Fermana machten. Ab dem 12. Jahrhundert wurde die Stadt eine freie Gemeinde und ging von Hand zu Hand auf verschiedene Herrschaften über.
Die Stadt verfügt über zahlreiche Kirchen und Palazzi, die von den verschiedenen Herren erbaut wurden, die die Stadt regierten. Von besonderem Interesse ist jedoch der Komplex der römischen Zisternen, eine riesige 2000 Quadratmeter große unterirdische Struktur, die zu dieser Zeit gebaut wurde, um Wasser für die Verteilung in der Stadt zu sammeln.
